As Mandi pointed out earlier, one of the most common uses of the semicolon is to join two independent clauses when they are joined with a conjunctive adverb to show the relationship between the two clauses.
I wanted to buy a new computer; therefore, I started researching the new computers on the market.
I was going to work tonight; however, I slammed my finger in the door, which makes it difficult to type.
